Shopify eases brick-and-mortar transition with new hardware offering (by DAN BERTHIAUME, sourced from Chain Store Age)

Shopify is introducing POS hardware aimed at online retailers moving offline.

The e-commerce platform’s new collection of retail hardware includes a tap & chip reader, dock, and retail stand.

Shopify’s tap & chip reader enables in-store shoppers to securely choose how they pay by tapping their payment-enabled phone or inserting their debit or credit card. The reader also connects seamlessly to Shopify POS software, which offers multi-channel inventory management, secure payments, and a consolidated back end that connects directly with a merchant’s online store.

Shopify is also launching a dock designed to hold and charge the reader. Retailers can connect the reader with the dock for a traditional countertop checkout, or detach it for mobile checkout. The retail stand can be placed on the counter next to the reader dock or moved around the store to support mobile checkout, and tilts and extends power and connectivity for the Shopify POS tablet.

Shopify has been gradually making inroads into brick-and-mortar retailing. The company launched a physical credit card reader in April 2017, and opened its first-ever physical outpost, a 3,000-sq.-ft. space in downtown Los Angeles, in October 2018.
