The total retail sales of consumer goods went up by 7.2% year-on-year in 2023

On January 17, data from the National Bureau of Statistics of China showed that in December 2023, the total retail sales of consumer goods reached 4,355 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 7.4%. Among them, the retail sales of consumer goods other than automobiles were 3,813.1 billion yuan, an increase of 7.9 percent. In 2023, the total retail sales of consumer goods will 47149.5 billion yuan, an increase of 7.2% over the previous year. Among them, the retail sales of consumer goods other than automobiles 42288.1 billion yuan, an increase of 7.3%.

In terms of consumption type, in December, the retail sales of goods were 3,814.5 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.8%; catering revenue was 540.5 billion yuan, an increase of 30.0%. In 2023, retail sales of goods will 41860.5 billion yuan, an increase of 5.8% over the previous year; catering revenue was 5,289 billion yuan, an increase of 20.4 percent. In 2023, the retail sales of department stores, convenience stores, specialty stores and brand stores among retail units above designated size increased by 8.8%, 7.5%, 4.9% and 4.5% respectively over the previous year, while the retail sales of supermarkets decreased by 0.4% over the previous year. In 2023, the national online retail sales will 15426.4 billion yuan, an increase of 11.0% over the previous year. Among them, the online retail sales of physical goods 13017.4 billion yuan, an increase of 8.4%, accounting for 27.6% of the total retail sales of consumer goods.
